Oak Class
Welcome to Year 5/6’s Class Page!
We are excited for the new school year. Visit again soon to find out more about our learning for the term ahead and some of the exciting wow moments that we have planned.
Our class teacher from September is Mrs Middleton.
Picture children growing up, finding their wings and stretching them. Our children are inspired in Y5/6 to confidently take more and more responsibility for themselves and for helping younger children. Our oldest children are the role models for the rest of the school through the way they work and play and care for each other.
Our oldest children are warmly nurtured as they look ahead to taking the step up to secondary school, given the support they need to thrive and given the skills to grow beyond that support as they start to become independent young people.
Our children are skilfully enabled to achieve their very best and to achieve well in the national tests they are challenged to do at the end of Y6; they are equipped with the skills to tackle anything that comes their way, knowing that they have successfully conquered so many things already.
Our young people learn in Y5/6 how to start to become their own unique selves, to learn, to share, to create, to perform, to care about each other and our world.
Term 1
Y5 and Y6 hit the ground running with our rich curriculum. In RE, we studied Hinduism. It was interesting to understand different beliefs and traditions together with understanding Hindu symbols.
For Wellbeing, we have started our Wellbeing home board, where we have an array of different pets photographs from home, above the whiteboard. We are fortunate to be based near to the PE field, so in September and October we had 'Brain breaks' and Golden Time as rewards for all of the children's hard work.
In PE, we have covered a wealth of topics already, which has been fun. From basketball, netball and dodgeball. Oak class always put 100% in our sports activities.
In maths, we have covered place-value to millions and addition/subtraction. We have been studying our timetables daily together with Rapid Recall which revises Mental Maths and Roman Numerals.
English and Guided Reading have been so interesting. We focused on a text called 'The Dam'. The children created such a fabulous double spread setting description. In Guided Reading we have used a selection of different genres to cover a multitude of information and different types of questions.
Art sessions with Mrs Watts have been a true success! The children have created stunning space pictures, which currently decorate our classroom wall. Geography has been so interesting too - collating data and creating Pie charts regarding local Fieldwork.
The first eight weeks, Oak class worked hard with their handwriting and presentation and we are very proud of them all. Well done all!
Term 2
We have had such a busy November and December in Oak class.
We have concentrated on presentation and handwriting in all lessons; it really shows in our work throughout the curriculum. Amazing 'Double Spread' work has been produced in Science this term, focusing on our Solar System, our Moon and how night becomes day. The children have researched their favourite planets and explained why they would like to visit there.
In History, we have looked at WW2 in depth, studying the impact the War had on many different individuals, from Anne Frank to female double agent spies. Their lives were so interesting. We looked at Rationing and how that impacted our nation, together with Propaganda campaigns. We have had some amazing posters created at home. We have been learning about the impact the war had on British children too. The Evacuation process in 1939 change many lives. We are continuing to learn more about Evacuees on the 17th January 2025, when we have a school trip and travel back in time as WW2 children. Children are invited to dress up to match the era.
Design and Technology has also matched the WW2 topic as Oak Class have been designing and creating Anderson Shelters. They are brilliant and so imaginative!
Maths - We have been learning fractions, multiplication and division. Long division has been fun!
English - We have been concentrating on Spellings, Grammar and writing Newspaper Reports and Diary Entries based on Anne Frank.
RE - We have been studying Christianity and the Arrival of The Messiah.
Christmas is quickly approaching, so we have made Four Seasons Calendars to take home.
We are all looking forward to a fun-filled Term 2.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
Term 3
Where does the time go? Term 3 has flown by with the children continuing to work incredibly hard. We have had a big class focus on looking at 2/3 mark questions in our guided reading lessons. Questions like: What impression do you get of the main character of the text? We have looked at how to answer this effectively, using evidence to support our answers, whilst not overwriting. We have discussed point + evidence + point + evidence. The children are all showing a better understanding of how to answer these types of questions now.
In maths, we have covered a very large fraction unit. We have revised adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, we have learnt how to multiply fractions by integers (3/5 x 6), how to multiply fractions by fractions (3/5 x 6/7), how to divide fractions by integers 3/4 / 6, and how to find fractions of amounts (3/7 of 49).
We will continue to revise this content over Term 4 together with learning Area, Perimeter, Volume and Capacity. Each week we have an arithmetic test, which Oak class seem to enjoy.
In Art this term Priory have been studying The Surrealists. We explored the different ways that these dream-like pictures are presented and created some of our own surreal images using photography and mixed media. Finally, each student created their own surrealist picture based on an imagined dream.
Our Science unit this term was Properties and Changes of Materials. We have studied the state changes and reversible and irreversible reactions. We have learnt how to control variables to ensure that the results of investigations are reliable and used lots of scientific vocabulary to report our findings. We have now moved on to studying Electricity.
Geography has been extremely interesting this term. We have studied Population around the world moving to Globalisation. Oak class have grasped the new relevant vocabulary that goes with the fascinating topic.
