Global Goals

Children at Wraxall are active citizens and demonstrate an awareness of the wider world and social responsibility on a regular basis. This year we have launched Global Goals learning at our school. Global Goals are part of the United Nations Sustainability Plan. In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030.

These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. The children have started to reflect on these goals and from September we have had an eager group of Pupil leaders called ‘Global Champions’ with responsibility for helping to develop and promote awareness of these goals within school. They are a professional group of children who take minutes for their meetings, draw up action plans and lead collective worships linked to their initiatives in school.

We held a ‘Global Goals Arts Week’ in September last year to launch this project and the work that the school has already done to support the achievement and understanding of these goals.

Our school aim to support the UN in achieving the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. We have a Global Champions committee who meet regularly and have generated our own school action plan to help us achieve these goals.

We review our impact on the environment, support a wide range of charities and seek to improve equality for all.

We held a Global Goals Arts Week. We were visited by the North Somerset Music Service who led Music Composition workshops and we created water themed pieces of music. We also played the Gamelan, from Indonesia, as we explored the impact of climate change on islands in this region. We also made a whole school piece of artwork of a turtle using mixed media including recycled materials. We took part in a key stage dance routine about having compassion for the world. We had a wide range of guest speakers including some Natural history experts, an ethical bookshop and a zero-waste shopkeeper. At the end of the week, we held a Global Roadshow. Parents were invited to see our artwork from the week and we made a video to share our music, poetry and dance routines. We had a book sale held by an ethical bookshop who brought many environmental and global themed books. We wrote pledges explaining which actions we were going to make to improve our world.

Our children are active citizens and work hard to bring about positive change. They are courageous advocates for the environment. They hold teachers to account when laminating and ask “Do you need that to last over 100 years?” They also check that the classrooms are energy saving by turning off heating and lighting when they are not needed. They litter pick in the school grounds regularly and also lead Collective Worship to share their concerns and actions. This is particularly relevant to our school values of Compassion, Respect and Responsibility.
